Spencer House School is a 4-place specialist provision attached to Spencer House Residential Children’s home.
The school only caters for young people who are resident in Spencer House and is registered for children and young people aged 11-18. Spencer House is a therapeutic home and makes provision for young people whose identified social, emotional health needs require services at Tier 4 level.
Students at the school are likely to have had a fragmented education with a consequent impact on their levels of attainment. Their experience of education has meant that they are often wary, if not oppositional, towards any education provision.
The first aim of the school is to break down the barriers to education that the young people have experienced. This starts with having a clear view of their educational, as well as their social and emotional, needs. This picture of their education profile is built from pre-placement information, (and we make every effort to gain relevant information from their previous settings). Spencer House’s Psychotherapist will ensure that the care, therapeutic and educational plans are closely aligned.
The school will produce a detailed ‘access plan’ for each student which will clearly detail the curriculum and teaching styles which will engage the young person and develop their skills and confidence so that they can improve their attainment levels and achieve accreditation which will help them make the transition into their next phase of learning/training/employment.
The identified needs, strengths and aspirations of the young person will determine the exact content of this personalised learning programme.
