New Start is a family-run business, originally formed in 1972 as a building and development company. Early work focused on renovating properties, and carrying out contract repair and maintenance work for housing associations across Merseyside.
By the 1980’s the company had build up a substantial portfolio of property within the Liverpool area, and found themselves being approached by various housing and care organisations seeking properties they could utilise to provide varying levels of supported housing.
By the mid 1990’s a large proportion of New Starts properties were being let to supported accommodation providers in the city. It was around this time that New Start acquired Strathmore Lodge. Its purpose was initially to provide Move-on accommodation for the Field Lane Hostel in Fazakerley. Service users moving into this property often had a history of re-curing homelessness and many suffered from a wide range of problems including drug and/or alcohol dependency, enduring mental illness or learning difficulties. New Start quickly identified that to manage tenants with such complexities a support strategy would need to be implemented. Therefore, the business began to adapt and evolve to meet such requirements, taking a new direction as a Social Landlord.
New Start is now a well-establish support and accommodation provider in Liverpool. The Social Enterprise employs a committed workforce in which 40 members of staff provide a broad range of accommodation and support services designed to meet the diverse needs of over 200 tenants across the city.
The organisation aims to:
- Provide safe environments for all the tenants supported by the service
- Promote healthy lifestyles
- Provide support to achieve, and then sustain economic well-being
- Encourage participation in meaningful activities
- Assist service users to develop confidence and the ability to achieve greater choice, control and involvement both within the service they receive and the wider community in which they live
- Ensure fair access to elements of New Starts services, as well as responding to the diverse needs of each individual accessing the services.
In June 2009 New Starts Head office relocated to the Job Bank, Wavertree Liverpool. On 02/07/09 the company facilitated a structured re-launch of the organisation in which various agencies and stakeholders were invited along to hear a presentation showcasing how the organisation delivers provision across the city by encompassing staff, service user and stakeholder points of view. The audience was then given the opportunity to participate in a questions and answers session as well as sample the newly developed promotional DVD.
