New Start Homes

Abstinence & Support Services

New Starts Abstinence Housing and Support Services provide drug and alcohol free environments for people with a history of substance misuse, who are at various stages of recovery from addiction.

Halkyn House was opened by the New Start in December 2008 as the organisations first Abstinence site. The purpose of the service was to provide a safe and good quality rehabilitation house in which service users could benefit from support whilst tackling addiction.

By February 2009, it was clear that Halkyn House was a huge success. Not only were the aims and objectives of the service being met, but it was also having a positive impact on the lives of the service users supported within the project.

This prompted New Start to implement expansion plans to increase the capacity of the Abstinence service by opening additional sites to address the unmet needs across the city.

The project currently has the capacity to provide 16 units of supported rehabilitation accommodation that is substance-free.

Individuals securing a placement within New Starts abstinence services’ can benefit from good quality, stable and secure housing with support that incorporates access to:
  • Therapeutic services
  • Self help groups
  • Vocational training
  • Community Activities
  • Developing confidence and independence

By looking at the bigger picture and not just focusing on the addiction and recovery elements of the process, New Start believe that lives can be repaired, re-built and sustained.

New Start Provide ‘the full package’
Support

The duration of stay at the Abstinence projects can range from 3 months up to 2 years; dependent upon the progress of the individual and the stage of recovery they feel they are at. This is identifiable via outcome-focused support planning; enabling both the individual and the support worker to pinpoint support requirements and develop strategies to work towards addressing needs to move development forward.

Support will also address future resettlement and access to accommodation within either the social or private landlord sectors. The chosen route will be the choice of the individual - taking into account their aspirations and the level of progress they make towards successful recovery and independent living.

Who is it for?
The service is available to individuals who are committed to remaining abstinent from all substances and:
  • are in need of a safe environment in which to reside whilst either commencing on or receiving abstinence-based day treatment for addiction.

OR

  • have completed an addiction treatment programme and require a safe environment in which to reside, to gain further confidence and stronger recovery prior to attaining independent housing.
